So, this is a little short for my liking, and some of the character development is a little... lacking (the love interest that he "can't stop thinking about everyday" is a nurse that by all accounts our lead met a few times in hospital, and had one date at a burger joint and bar with), but I liked this. The EMS is accurate (as I'd hope considering the author's qualifications), and the story line is nicely structured, laying the foundation for a future, but the author just needs to flesh out the people in his world.

Racing the Reaper Volume 1 Jerrid Edgington 9780985983871 Books Reviews
This book was extremely exciting from the first page. My emotions changed as I kept reading. Sadness, excitement, sweet, scared, emotional goodness. The accuracy of the medical side to the story line was phenomenal as well as the twists and turns with Jacobs life and starting his new career. Great writing and great read. Ready for book two.
Absolutely brilliant!! I love this novel and cannot wait for the rest of the trilogy to come out! Captivating and visual from page one. This will definatly be a trilogy that I will want to have a hard copy of for my personal library.
Whether you have expierence in the medical field or not this is a must read!!
New author on a great start to being a New York Times Best Seller!!
Not bad for a first book. The storyline holds your attention, but the erratic and quirky punctuation is somewhat distracting. There are also many missing words, and sound-alike spellings that pinged my OCD. On the plus side, the medical content is pretty accurate, though some of the EMS personnel occasionally behave in bizarre ways. The biggest negative for me the book suddenly ends in the middle of a scene! I understand that there is a second book which will presumably pick up the rest of the story, but feel that the reader deserves a little more than the abrupt stop without an ending.
I had heard about and read some positive reviews on this book, so I thought I'd give it a go. I am not disappointed at all. I messaged the author as I was reading the book and he told me the first few chapters were taken from his personal experience. That bit of information made the story all the more realistic and gripping. I admire the men and women who work as EMTs and paramedics. I couldn't do it. Thank you for all you do!
Heart-pounding moments of medical drama, overcoming seeming impossible odds, being stalked by a beautiful nemesis, all of these would make a good story. Jerrid Edgington weaves all these components together in Racing the Reaper to create a great read. Jacob, our main character, experiences a dizzying series of highs and lows, beginning with the incident that changes his life as he knew it and sets him on a path of life in emergency medicine. Edgington's knowledge of life as an EMT and paramedic bring an authenticity to his story so compelling that I could feel the IV needle pinch. From it's seemingly peaceful start at a city league softball game to it's explosive end, Racing the Reaper puts the reader there in the action.
Often mislabeled ambulance attendants, ambulance drivers or even band-aid bunnies, the people who respond to 9-1-1 and other calls for emergencies are trained, skilled, dedicated and often courageous individuals. EMTs and Paramedics are usually the first professional care medical and trauma emergencies receive pre-hospital.
What I am most impressed about by Mr. Edgington's tale is the very insightful human factor he focuses on. As an EMT myself (for nearly 30-years) I found it easy to relate to the thrills, fears, satisfaction and sometimes loss that the characters experienced. I chuckled when the author described some of the non-emergency 9-1-1 calls the ambulance crew was dispatched to, and found myself holding my breath as rescues were being made.
Yet as real as the descriptions of calls and treatments were, the story still read as entertainment and not textbook.
The ending which truly left the reader wanting more is a terrific prelude to a sequel (which I understand is well on its way!), one which I will certainly be waiting to read.
My recommendation is a resounding YES, read Racing the Reaper by Jerrid Edgington

~reviewed by Chelle Cordero, EMT and author of EMS novels Final Sin and Hyphema
The Author Jerrid Eddington obviously writes from experience... well done. I have read through other Customer Reviews that provide less than the Five Stars I provide and explain themselves for it. I am going to answer to those who ask 'Why such high rating?". I read for the story, and potential for more story-telling ... to encourage if I see potential. I do this, especially when its a first book published by the author. There is nothing easy about a team coming together to publish a book - e-Book or paper. In this instance, I believe my encouragement was well-placed. Eddington's second novel in series flows well from this first novel and is much improved. Being on all sides of the coins presented ... I find there is learning from low ratings, and as much from the encouragement of high ratings to provide balance. I have received only five star ratings, only to receive a one-star rating from someone who had obviously not read the book. In this age of spoliation (and there is a lot of it) I will always choose to err to encourage (if there must be an error found as some suggest). I am always reminded of the debate concerning 'Subject Matter Specialists versus the Interpretive Specialists' as initiated by the German Sociologist Max Weber. I remain of the opinion no person should hold themselves out as a critic of anything, until they know whether they are of the Subject Matter Specialists, the Interpretive Specialists, of a hybrid of the two camps at heart. With encouragement, I respectfully submit this review and further comment. G.
